Tourism & Recreation
Leverage Our Strengths:
San Angelo possesses numerous strengths, including its vibrant downtown businesses, the popular river stage, the expanding sports programs for all ages, and the nationally acclaimed rodeo. We must capitalize on these assets to drive economic growth and enhance our community’s quality of life.
Recreational Sports Facilities for All Ages:
The groundbreaking for the 29th Street Sports Area, adjacent to Kirby Park, took place on March 3rd. This long-awaited project will provide expanded, improved sports practice areas and a walking track for residents. This development revitalizes approximately 26 acres, enhancing recreational park space and attracting youth sports events to San Angelo. The Texas Bank Sports Complex and multiple sites around town are helping to define the city as a destination for youth sports.
Stock Show and Rodeo
Heads in Beds:
Nearly every hotel room in San Angelo is sold out during the rodeo. That is income spread over three weeks for the service industry.
Economic Impact:
The San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Association leases the Coliseum from COSA for the rodeo. The expansion and renovation of the facility would double the seating capacity to approximately 10,000 seats, comprising a grandstand, club-level, and box suites. Beyond the rodeo, this renovated venue will offer a versatile, plug-and-play space for a wide range of entertainment events throughout the year. The city will generate revenue from seating agreements, and local businesses will benefit from increased traffic. It will be a rental facility capable of attracting much larger headline events that have not found San Angelo to be a suitable venue in years past.
Scholarships:
The Association uses the profits of the rodeo for its foundation. It conveys almost $250,000 each year to college-bound students.
